Dramatic Tenor

Dramatic tenor roles require a tenor who can sing easily over a very big orchestra. Tenors cast in these roles often have a metallic ring to their voices, although sometimes, a darker, more “baritonal” vocal quality is desired. In German operas, the heaviest tenor roles are called heldentenors (The prefix “helden-“ means “heroic,” which is an apt description of the typical heldentenor role).
