Recitative: Essentially a tuneful speech; they move the action along, but aren’t as melodic as arias.
Ensemble: Multiple singers sing their own part, but all parts fit together.
Chorus: A company of singers supporting and commenting on the action.
Bravo: The Italian word shouted to show appreciation of a male performer.
Brava: The word shouted to a female performer.
Bravi: The word shouted when you just loved everyone!
Diva: you hear this a lot, referring to everyone from pop stars to movie stars, but opera stars is where it all began. It’s an Italian word meaning goddess. If you’re talking about a man, it’s divo.
