A plantation owner in the antebellum American South walks across his field and disappears - in plain view of his family, his neighbors and the slaves - forever altering their world. Everyone has his or her own theory of what that “disappearance” means, of why it had to happen, and of what will happen now that there is a “hole” where a man used to be. But where does the truth lie? Based on an Ambrose Bierce short story with libretto by Mac Wellman, David Lang’s mysterious chamber opera offers intrigue, secrecy, revelation, and surprise. Think Gone with the Wind meets The Twilight Zone!
