Nashville Opera and Vanderbilt University's Center for Latin American Studies and the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are collaborating on Move Closer, an exploration of the tango, its illustrious history, and its place in Nashville.
This creative collaboration will delve into the musical, artistic, and cultural aspects of the immersive dance through conversations and performances. Nashville Opera's CEO and Artistic Director John Hoomes will dive into the company’s upcoming production of Maria de Buenos Aires, an Argentinian tango opera with a surrealist narrative. Paula Covington, a Latin American and Iberian Bibliographer and Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt, will introduce the extensive tango collections of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries, and Vanderbilt’s Tango Club will perform and teach some steps of the dance during the reception to follow the presentations.
